Many people come to Antwerp for its shopping alone and the city has become synonymous in Belgium for its diamonds, antiques and high-fashion. The fashion scene in Antwerp has been booming for many years and if designer clothes are too expensive for your budget, then why not just enjoy an afternoon of window shopping.

Various traders sell a range of bric-a-brac (brocante) in Antwerp, particularly around the areas of Oever and Kloosterstraat. Each weekend, the Vogelmarkt takes place at the Theaterplein, while other prominent markets include Sunday's Rommelmarkt on St. Jansvliet, and the Saturday morning antiques market next to the Onze Lieve Vrouwkathedraal.

The majority of the shops in Antwerp open Monday to Saturday, from between 09:00 and 10:00 in the morning, closing anytime between 17:30 and 18:30. An ever-increasing number of shops have started to trade on Sundays, particularly around the Hoogstraat area and the Kloosterstraat.

The main shopping precincts in Antwerp are known as the Meir and the Keyserlei, and feature a wealth of leading department store giants, such as both Marks & Spencer and the Galeria Inno, together with a seemingly endless selection of smaller retailers.

However, if you find the crowds a little off-putting, then the shopping along the smaller streets of Huidevettersstraat is far more intimate and personal, although it is generally also more expensive. This part of Antwerp is referred to as its Quartier Latin and contains many upmarket stores, such as Korte Gasthuisstraat and Schuttershofstraat.

The Grand Bazar Shopping Centre is amongst the newest malls to appear in Antwerp and lies in the heart of the city, along the Beddenstraat and right next to the Hilton Hotel. Previously a historic department store, the Grand Bazar contains a good variety of small shops, along with terrace dining and stylish surroundings.
